Holes Project

by Lauren Sosnoski

Stanley Yelnats was given a choice. The judge said, "You may go to jail, or you may go to Camp Green Lake." Those are just a few words students in Mr. Cuttic’s 7th grade English classes read when they read the novel Holes by Louis Sachar. The students in Mr. Cuttic’s class read Holes because it is part of the 7th grade curriculum. They also watched the movie Holes directed by Andrew Davis including actors such as Shia LaBeouf, Khleo Thomas, Sigourney Weaver, and Jon Voight. Mr. Cuttic proposed a project to the students to do on the novel. The students were to show a visual representation of the story, and they were allowed to create posters, powerpoints, collages, dioramas, or even video skits depicting the novel.  The main requirements of the project were to make them extremely creative and for the students to demonstrate their best efforts. Students found very creative ways of depicting the novel through their projects. Some of the projects included a shovel made of poster board depicting pictures from the movie, collages, and even board games, which are all featured outside of Mr. Cuttic’s classroom, room 104. Mr. Cuttic commented, “The kids put a forth good effort into their projects and impressed me with their creativity.”
Camp Green Lake is like no other camp anywhere. It is a bizarre, almost otherworldly place that has no lake and nothing that is green. It is not the type of camp kids look forward to going to in the summertime.  It once held "the largest lake in Texas," but today it is only a scorching desert wasteland, dotted with countless holes dug by the boys who live at the camp. As the novel progresses, readers uncover many surprises. Holes is a very interesting novel that should be added on to your must read list. If you are interested in learning more about the novel Holes or are interested in seeing the creative Holes projects, you should stop by 104 and admire the 7th graders hard work.
