Four teams from the Mount Carmel Area School District are advancing to the state competition on April 12th where they will travel to Altoona. The high school place winners include Christine Mrozek, Samantha Spieller, Amy Besser, Kelsey Kraynak, Rachel Fletcher, Jessica Mann, and Eric Joraskie, coached by Aaron and Kelly Domanski. Danny Lesko, Nicole Purcell, Bryson Purcell, Robert Varano, Casey Lynott, Joe Zanella, and Tommy Lynott, coached by Mrs. Tara Pucell and Mrs. Corrina Lesko, took first place in their division in the Tee Structure completion. The team designed and built a structure using only balsa wood and glue. Then they took to the test to see how much weight it could support. Jamie Hoffman, Nicole Kiley, Ashlin Rodrigues, Matthew Shearn, Aleaha Ortona, Patrick Glanzmann, and Michael Purcell, coached by Cathi Hoffman, also advanced from the high school
Elementary team members Natasha Nevis, Peyton Worach, Mason Duran, David Quinn, Timmy Glowatski, and Andrew Shedleski, coached by. Ken Sheldleski, also moved on with their balsa wood structure.
Odyssey of the Mind is a non-profit international educational program that focuses on creative problem solving. Students in kindergarten through college compete with others throughout the United States and other countries. Upon advancing from states, the teams will have a chance to compete at the 20th World Finals held at the University of Maryland. Overall seven of the nine teams brought home a trophy.
